Fall Meeting Session Summaries

"Voice of the Customer"
Speaker: David Portalatin, NPD Group

With 2010 more than halfway behind us, all eyes are on consumers looking for signs of increased spending that will signal a more robust economic recovery. Consumer behavior has changed in unprecedented ways during the great recession. Drawing upon a wealth of consumer research, economic trends, and product sales data, NPD Industry Analyst David Portalatin will examine the current state of the consumer as well as provide insight into the factors that are likely to influence future behavior. Consumer attitudes toward their vehicles, driving habits, and economic outlook will influence behaviors that directly impact demand for a variety of packaged petroleum products. This engaging presentation will challenge attendees to think about what motivates consumer behavior and anticipate how changes in behavior will impact their business.

"Quo Vadis Modernization – Ready for the Rubicon?-The Future of Lubricant Modernization"
Speaker: Pablo Garce, FMC technologies

The petroleum specialty blenders are at a cross roads – the industry is facing market trends that require a con- scious decision to increase manufacturing flexibility and reduce operating costs. Although this challenge is significant, it is further complicated by the need for the facility to maintain full operations during modernization. This presentation will provide an outline of the dominant market trends and cost effective solutions to respond to these challenges.

"A Roadmap to Overall Equipment Effectiveness (OEE) For the Packaging Process: True Green is About Value & Profitability"
Speaker: Paul Zepf, Zarpac

To be truly Green, we need a true OEE methodology or roadmap along with an implementation strategy to deal effectively & efficiently with value and profitability. You will come away with the ability to understand and imple- ment a roadmap to show how to become and know you are truly Green as well as achieve the goal of becoming the highest quality, lowest cot on time producer in a simple & cost effective manner.

"Preventative Maintenance Using Thermal Analysis"
Speaker: Dennis Aulbrook, President, American Safety & Equipment

Infrared inspections of electrical equipment detect hot-spots well before problems occur. They are a key element of a thorough electrical maintenance program and are essential for identifying areas that may fail, causing equipment damage and/or fire. In this presentation you will learn the basics of infrared testing and the benefits of real time or periodic inspections that can point to hidden problems. Attendees will also learn about using IR data as a predictive indicator to maintain their building, electrical system and ultimately avoid costly repairs.

"Shifting into High Gear"
Speaker: Jeffrey L. Leiter, Esq., Leiter & Cramer, PLLC

PPC Counsel Jeff Leiter's "Legs & Regs" presentation is expected to focus on three main themes: (1) legislative and regulatory initiatives, such as OSHA's rulemaking to revise its Hazard Communication Standard and the implementation of health care reform, that directly affect PPC members; (2) Congress' eyes being bigger than its calendar, as legislators rush to pass key legislation; and, (3) a look at the handicapping for this November’s general elections.

"The New Regulatory Calculus"
Speaker: John McQuaid, IPANA

John's presentation will provide an overview of domestic and international regulatory activities affecting U.S. industrial packaging manufacturers and reconditioners. Since last fall there has been increasing scrutiny of the Pipeline & Hazardous Materials Safety Administration's (PHMSA) oversight of hazardous materials regulations that have resulted in a reorganization within the agency, protracted regulatory decision making, greater scrutiny of industry hazmat safety compliance, and higher costs for the regulated community.

Third Coast Checmials is Evaluating Entry Into the Popylene Glycol Tertiary Butyl Ether (Glycol Ether PTB) Market

Propylene Glycol tertiary Butyl Ether, a specialty glycol ether, is used by the industrial coatings and industrial and institutional cleaners industries as a low toxicity formulation solvent. The product has recently been withdrawn by the current sole worldwide supplier.

Product is expected to be available later this year following further economic evaluation and technical scale up. Propylene Glycol tertiary Butyl Ether is also known as Tertiary Butoxy Propanol, PTB, PTBE. The CAS number is 57018-52-7.

Martin Staley, Vice President for Third Coast Chemicals commented, “Third Coast Chemicals has been working on entry into the PTB business over the past few months. We wanted to inform the existing customer base of this news as a means to help them in their decision making process. Product is anticipated being available later in the year from ourselves. We understand that there are stocks available for the coming few months and our entry would be welcomed by the customers as it would allow continued supply of this specialty glycol ether.”
